In Democratic Setting, Is It Right to Use Military against Unarmed Peaceful Protesters?
Depends what the military are being used to do. If it is to intimidate then no its not right. if it is to just peacefully chaperone the protestors then its fine if there is no alternative. Are you referring to something in particular Kenneth?
Yes. It happened in Nigeria where the federal of government Nigeria sent military to use live bullets against unarmed and peaceful protesters.
It’s not right at all, but it also depends on which democratic country you are referring to. We have some countries which look to be democratic and those that are democratic.
I concor with you
Me too
There is not right to use Military against unarmed peaceful protesters. You have already said peaceful protesters and they are unarmed. They are surely protesting for their right,. you can use military not against them, instead to protect them because some bad people can mix with them to do Evil.
In democratic country military are use protect people.
Thanks Leno you answered very well.
Thank you, I’m trying to do my best as a non native English speaker, it is a little bit difficult but as we used to say: nothing is impossible ,the only thing that can stop you is you.
I will not allow myself to stop me.
I think you have to qualify what military is / means. They can be used if you don’t have anyone else to manage the protestors like police etc
Certainly no. But that was done in Nigeria. The military was deployed to shoot the ENDSARS protesters which led to bloodbath. It was extremely tragic.
It is totally wrong to use military against unarmed peaceful protesters.
That’s very correct
Principally, the use of military to coerce people is not allowed in democratic country. The very principle of democracy is that we use the power of conscience to solve every problem. Democracy guarantee the freedom of for every citizen. And the government in the democratic country must be smart enough and very innovative in their way of thinking to solve every problem using conscience.
So what is everyone saying in regards to managing the protestors? Are they to be left to their own devices or controlled in some way. There is always going to be a group that wants to cause trouble how should they be managed?
Soldiers are not trained to handle protesters. In a democratic country the police should be the ones controlling crowds, using water canons, tear gas and rubber bullets. Soldiers protect borders against outside invaders and should only assist the police in emergency situations.
Unlikely in most African countries, the protesters are treated as criminals, gang, evil person, forgetting that they have the right to protest if things are not going well for them.In my country many innocent are killed every demonstration movement.
Very sad to hear Leno. In the UK we dont really have that problem and when we do fatalities are always very low.
Yes Mr Edwards, in UK and in most European countries, Human Rights are strictly respected. Population and leaders know what they should do and what they should not do. Both side know their rights and limits.
I am so glad that I live in this wonderful democratic country where everyone knows their place and the military only defend us from outside influences.
Is totally wrong using live bullets against unarmed peaceful protesters. This can only in animal kingdom call Africa.
No it’s not allowed but if you are talking from the African perspective, there’s no democracy.
There is no right to use Military against unarmed peaceful protesters, instead the military should be used to protect, secure the peaceful protesters. We can not talk about democracy in Africa, here we have dictators and dictatorial government.
In my country democracy is different from yours,in Uganda if you demonstrate you will be killed by live bullets.Recently 50 people were killed during demonstration against imprisonment of their presidential candidate.
Democratic country should never use military service against its population. They should do the contrary by helping the citizens to claim their duties.
Democratic countries should never use military against peaceful demostrants.
It is absolutely wrong to use live bullets against unarmed and peaceful protesters .
Yes, i don’t appreciate it at all, it is a act of dictatorial government to use military service against the peaceful protesters and unarmed people.
The democracy is the for the people, if you take military service against the peaceful protesters, i can no longer call it a democractic country. In democratic country people are free to speak, to demonstrate if things are not working good, to express their thoughts and opinions.
Military service is to secure the people and their families. A democracy is a form of government in which the people have the authority to choose their governing legislators.the power is rule by the people and is for the people also in democratic country the fondamental humains right are guaranteed. So if the government take military service against protesters, i think it should not be a democratic country .
