Is COVID-19 the Major Cause of This Massive Unemployment?

Do you think COVID-19 has created unemployment or it’s was just just a disaster waiting for trigger to happen? Since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, many people have been rendered unemployed. Many companies have laid off workers due to falling sales, revenues and the need to streamline the working environment. Everyday in the news, we read about people being laid off from work, pay cuts, etc. which are all a result of the effects of this pandemic. Probably, some of us could be victims of the circumstances. But, even before COVID-19 came, unemployment levels were high, and many people has no jobs, only the pandemic worsened the situation. Generally, when we look at global figures of unemployment prior to COVID-19 outbreak, there could be an argument that, unemployment was already a global issue. However, with the outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic, most attention has been shifted to it, as the major sole cause for this massive unemployment problem. What is your opinion on this?

It is true that the level of unemployment before COVID-19 pandemic is high. But the COVID-19 pandemic is only making it higher. Currently, I am conducting research on the effect of COVID-19 on agricultural sector, especially the broiler sector. Broiler meat is one of the staple food in Indonesia. Thus, the demand for broiler meat should be unaltered in any situation, including the COVID-19.

But, the early findings of my research show that COVID-19 has a devastating effect on broiler farming. First, most of feed used in Indonesian broiler industry were imported from the US, Australia, and Brazil. The pandemic has encouraged countries to put trade restrictions. It then decreases feed stock and increase its price. Consequently, the cost of broiler farming is getting higher. Also, the pandemic causes the government to put restrictions on social gathering. It significantly decreases the demand for broiler meat, since chicken meat is a primary menu in the social gathering in Indonesia. Thus the market price of broiler meat is significantly lower during the pandemic.

This two side effect of COVID-19 pandemic, on the input side and output side, has put a severe pressure on the sector performance. Currently, at least 70% of broiler firm have closed their business, leaving their employees unemployed. Also, many farmers has stopped their production due to unfavorable conditions during the pandemic.

Thus, yes, COVID-19 pandemic is the major cause of high unemployment in the year of 2020.

I feel that Covid-19 is a huge reason for the increase of unemployment currently happening companies and or small business has taken a huge knock therefor making retrenchment a very real reality also companies and small business may not be allowed to operate as normal due to social distancing and other factors. Businesses have defiantly gotten a hard time ahead to try and get back to to the position they have been before the pandemic and all this does increase the already high unemployment number and this will continue to happen in my opinion until the affects of the pandemic has become lighter to bear for businesses.

All industries related to tourism are completely devastated during Covid 19 pandemic . Many countries started travelling ban from the month of March till now. Many small airlines companies already closed their operations. Thousand of employees related to aviation industry lost their job and it will be very difficult to get a new job. Many small and big hotels closed and again big no of people lost their job. Industries related to tourism like travel agencies ,tour guides, travel buses drivers also affected by Covid 19.

The unemployment rate was already higher in many countries accros the world, specially in Africa before the breakout the covid19 pandemic. Now the pandemic has raised the levels because most employees has become unemployed and many companies, factory collapse. It is not the main cause of the unemployment but it contributed to take increase the level at the highest point.

We don’t have the blame the pandemic too much for the unemployment.it is true that it has it contrubition in the unemployment rate and provoked many companies and factories to laid off many people, but there were already unemployment before the pandemic.we have to focus on how to reduce this rate instead of thinking about the problem it has caused. It has already happened.

I must say that the Covid has really accelerated this stalled global economy. Here in New York even when the cases were slowly starting to rise and then it quickly rose people had work.No matter what it was.I have a couple of friends who just suddenly lost their jobs and were and still continue to receive that unemployment insurance. We do not believe these job figures that get announced every month. We feel that things just will take a lot of time to return to normal.

We have more unemployed people that before because the pandemic has caused many impacts on companies and factories that was obliged to diminish the number of their employees. It has dramatically increase the unemployment rate than before.

I personally don’t blame the covid19 to be responsible for the unemployment.what is true is that it hase increase the number of jobless people, but there are many others factors that caused the unemployment before the outbreak of corona virus in the beginning of 2020.

A large number of people in Australia that lost their job due to COVID and the lockdowns have generally been reemployed. There are a number of businesses that have not started up again and there is the tourism industry as well as the airline industry across the world that will take a little longer to to restart. I am sure there will be a a considerable amount of downsizing in the airline industry and there will be some people that will never work in this industry again.

Really people who worked in tourism and airline industries will take long to go back to work. Another big number will definitely lose their jobs permanently of course.

Good for them Mr Edward, it is funny to be employed after being laid off from work. Australia is really doing great for their citizens. I also totally agree with you about tourism and airplanes industry,it will take long time for them to recover their happiness. Many airline companies are in financial trouble.

Let’s be honest to yourself, many people were jobless, unactive and laid off before the outbreak of corona virus, corona has just raised the level of unemployment in the world. We can’t continue to blame it, let’s find ways to solve the problem. There will always be unemployed people, the rate will according to the circumstances and time like it raise during this pandemic.
