Plankton a Source of Oxygen. Did You Know That?

We have believed for years that our main and or only source of oxygen came from plants and plant life but scientist have found plankton to not just be food for whales and other sea animals but a large source of oxygen the essence of life as we know it.

Plankton produces oxygen much alike to plant life by removing the carbon dioxide we breathe from the air and replacing it with oxygen for us to breathe.

For those that wish to investigate further there is heaps of information across the web but the national geographic group explains it best in my opinion. the “Tara expedition” was led by a group of scientist that proved plankton to be a source of oxygen if you also want to look into that.

Who knew plankton was a source of oxygen I did not until I watched a documentary about it I think it is supper cool.

Its my first time to know this. It sounds good for humans because we produce lot of carbon dioxide, now another source of oxygen will be a great things for all living things that breathe oxygen and remove the carbon dioxide.

Plankton are organisms that live suspended in water. They are found mostly in oceans where they are a source of food for sea life.
They operate in much the same way ordinary plants produce oxygen by photosynthesis. Using sunlight, carbon-dioxide, nitrogen and other dissolved substances, the organism is able to make its own food and produce oxygen in the process.
Like all other marine life these organisms are also threatened by pollution and climate change.

Hi Shane, thank you for the article, even though I did biology when I was in high school I have either forgotten this point or it was not known back in the early eighties. Appreciate the research and the post.

It’s really great to know Shane, most of us just see ourselves moving but we don’t mind to find out that some supernatural power cares so much for humanity to put such helpful things in place for human beings to use.

As we know that plankton is a source of oxygen that human can use to breathe, we should grow planton in some areas to have more plankton and increase the production of oxygen to purify the air.

Oxygen is a life for all living things that breathe oxygen and remove the carbon dioxid.we have to protect the plankton in other to have lot of oxygen to purify the air.

We have to protect the plankton in order to increase the oxygen in the air. It will benefits all living things using oxygen to breathe.

Yes. Scientists have long reported that the ocean is full of photosynthetic plankton which produce 50-80% of oxygen on ocean. Although invisible to the naked eye, plankton produce more oxygen than the redwoods. It is indeed an interesting fact.

Phytoplankton are microscopic plants, but they play a huge role in the marrine foods web like plants on land phytoplankton perform photosynthesis to convert the sun’s rays into energy to support them, and they take the carbon dioxyde and produce oxygene.they can be found near the water’s surface because the need sun’s energy.
