💥 Should Everyone Have the Right to Own Guns?
Over the decades this has been a very controversial subject around the world with every country having its own view. Here in the UK we can obtain a license for a shotgun or rifle for sport or hunting. The system is very controlled and police vetted. Generally I think this has inadvertently kept the amount of gun crime down when compared to other countries with only 33 people dyeing from gun crime in 2019. Obviously in the USA everyone can freely buy a firearm and I don’t believe there are many restrictions. In 2019 they had 15,292 people die as a result of gun crime.
What is the situation in your country and do you think everyone should have the right to own a gun?
No, is not right for everyone to own a gun
Everyone should not have right to have a gun.
In my country you have to registrarte all the weapons you have in your home. You have to ask the police before you buy a gun and the police can deny your wish to registrarte it. It is also a limit for number of weapons in your home and you must have a reason for having a weapon, for instance hunting.
Hi Gareth White, in my country Uganda, it’s not good for everyone to have a right to own a gun. The levels of poverty and unemployment are still too high, and this will just make it crazy, crime rate would shoot through the roof. I think the right should be left a few rich who can manage, and the security agencies only.
You are very wright my brother,if security forces can rent guns to thieves unlawfully, what will happen, if they are made available to all persons.
Hi Jackson, yes you are quite right with your example. Although they still need to be regulated otherwise the rich will exploit even more people with gun violence
In my country is not allowed to own gun or firearm except army, gendarm, police, and security guard.
Every one is allowed to own a gun in Nigeria so far you can obtain the license.
It is not right for everyone to own a gun. It should be reserved for certain people with very strict license in order to ameliorate the crime rate.
I think giving people the right to own a gun, without improving their wisdom is a disaster. The police and the military personnel are armed with gun because they have trained both mentally and physically to use the gun wisely. If, everyone has a gun, with their varying degree of wisdom, then we can see a jump in gun-related-death.
In Indonesia, gun is not allowed for civilian. And I think, for an average person in Indonesia, they don’t need any gun for self protection.
There is clearly a strong bias towards the fact that civilians shouldn’t be able to have guns – why do we think the US is so pro guns? Have they got it completely wrong?
Guns should be a reserve of security agencies because individual persons will use to personal issues.
There should be clear laws for one to access a gun.Only security people should be allowed to have guns, and only allowed by government.Countries where guns are owned by individuals have many cases of murder caused by guns.
In South Africa, you have to be over 21 years of age to apply for a license to own a gun. You have to undergo prescribed training at an accredited training provider and obtain a competency certificate. Furthermore you are required to:
Be mentally stable.
Pass a background check.
Not have a criminal record.
Not be addicted to drugs or alcohol.
But with our high number of gun killings, it’s obvious that the above requirements are for the poor law-abiding citizens, the unlicensed guns are in the hands of criminals. No, not everyone should have the right to own a gun.
Its really not allowed in some country why? Because if someone use guns for murdered who knows? Can be dificult to catch murderer if everyone own guns
Yes looks like the majority so far is of the opinion that guns should not be allowed to everyone but reserved for military, security agencies – maybe farmers/gamekeepers. In the wrong hands they can have devastating consequences.
Totally agree with Gareth White.
Why I say guns should be a monopoly of security agencies? Yes, someone can acquire and register it say for purposes of say hunting, but it doesn’t stop that person from misusing it.
It will always be misusing cases. You cannot have a monopoly situation for weapons in a country. It is so many dissent people that have need for a weapon for competion shooting and hunting. In Norway the police check up people before they give license to owe a weapon. Competition shooting and hunting is a big activity in Norway.
There should be very strict laws that legalised the use of guns in order to avoid chaos.
Sreinar – I concur with you when you talk of Norway, but maybe I should have stressed my point in different way. Let’s look at less developed like in Africa, if it’s allowed everyone to own a gun, it’s going to be a different scenario.
I see your point Jackson. Every country have to find their own way to handle with weapon regulations. It depends of the situation in the country.
Why people are interested to owe a gun, simply because many crinimals, evils person, gangsters are owing guns.how did they get those guns? No one knows even the government don’t know the answer. It to tell you that if they allow every body to own gun,the criminality rate will increase day after day and it won’t be easy to control the whole country.
It is very similar here in Australia to the UK where we have to have a licence to own a firearm and they only weapons of a particular type and certainlt nor semi automatics or bump action shotguns. We also have rules around the ownership of pistols where you have to be a member of a gun club.
The US constitution has the 5th amendment and that is about the right to bear arms and I know that Obama thought about changing the constitution and was howled down by the guns owners. Yes I think the Americans need to step into the 21st century and understand the wild west has been won and it is time to give up their sophisticated weaponry.
To comment more on gun ownership, I think we should learn a lot from those countries where gun ownership is a right for everyone instance the US, gun violence has hit it’s highest pick. That’s why it’s easy for enforcement/ police officer to open fire on a suspect because they expect it also. But in my country a police officer will come and arrest a suspect even without necessarily having a gun and there won’t be bloodshed.
In Nigeria everyone should be given a right to own a gun because insecurity is very high.Moveover, Nigerian police personnels that is always with gun don’t receive any form of training.
For the protection and the person’s safe, with the increase of criminality, armed robbers, thieves,… Every one should have a gun, but i don’t think it is a best solution for the sake of the population. Human mind is not stable.
Living in a country with a high crime rate I completely understand the need for everyone to want to own a firearm for protection but not everyone is capable of handling a gun or have the sense of responsibility for owning something that could be so potentially final. I feel that protection is crucial even if only owning a firearm makes you feel a little bit safer but the owner has to have had training so that the owner knows how to use the gun correctly and guns are not to be used for bragging or to threaten others. I don\’t believe everyone is capable or should own a gun but as individuals we all have our own believes.
There certainly needs to be rules and regulations in place otherwise it is just a free for all and people being shot becomes the norm. Unfortunately like so many of you have commented in certain countries there are not enough controls or policing of who has firearms and its out of control.
It will be very dangerous for everyone to have a gun, the gun can fall in bad people, criminals gangsters, armed robbers etc leading to a rise of criminality.it also important some some people to have their own guns for protection, but they should pass lot of process before having a gun and they must be regulated and controlled.
It is not wise to let everyone have a gun even with a stricter control, it will certainly increase the rate of criminality, armed robbery, and many others type of crimes.
Yes,especially in this part of the world called Africa. The high level of insecurity in Africa is too much, mostly Nigeria. I am on the opinion that every one should be given right to own Gun, this will happen the people to secure themselves since security operatives have failed woefully.
You cannot give anyone the right to owe a gun. It will increase shotings and death. To have a weapon you must have a legal reason to owe it, and this ownerhip have to be controlled by the police trhrough a system with a license.
If everyone owe a gun it will increase the criminality specially in Africa. Most weak people will use their gun to kidnaps, robbe, and shoot on unarmed people. The insecurity will be everywhere and police officer and Army won’t be able to control everybody.
I think this is probably the rule all over the world Leno and not just in Africa. When everyone has something they become use to it and its seen as part of normal life. Then the opportunity for crime increases to.
The country will be a field of battle where the stronger can do whatever he wants to the weak. Most good people will turn into bad people, Human minds can change at any time. Shooting will be every where and the police won’t be able to control and handle all situations.
True Leno – in a lot of countries the Police are not in control at the moment and that is half the problem. Without control comes chaos!
No one should have the right to own gun. Because, one can easily kill is one another
If Government and countries allow every one to own a gun, we will see humans boby in many streets and corners. Crimes and killing will raise exponentially, armed robbing will take another level and innocents people will paye the price of that decision.
There are so many dangers with knives and car let alone adding guns to the mix. It should all be regulated and controlled.
Yes, Everyone should be given right to own Gun. In Nigeria, government can not protect us.
The gun laws in Australia changed after the Port Arthur massacre in Tasmania where we had an amnesty and there were thousands of guns turned over to Police.
Australia has not seen anything like Port Arthur since. Prior to Port Arthur there has been other shootings prior to Port Arthur and this was the massacre where everyone said enough is enough.
In America the biggest problem is everyone is a constitutional lawyer and they quote their amendment rights.
