Should Humans Invest in Technology to Explore and Colonize Other Planets?

As climate change is starting to have a dramatic effect on planet earth and the fact that we have advanced so much technologically in the last 50 years should we now look to try an explore the possibility of colonizing one of the many planets in the solar system. We have recently discovered frozen lakes on Mars so maybe this is the next step. What does everyone think and would you go if you were offered a place on the space shuttle?

Yes, I think it’s one way to look at survival in future, in case planet earth become uninhabitable. Because climate change might make it more impossible in future for human beings live on Earth.

I think the opposite is true, we should invest in technology that solve all problems the earth is currently experiencing. I think we need technology that makes the earth more livable to all people. Technology that solve climate change, increase the quantity and quality of world food system, technology that foster green economy, and the likes.

Exploring another planet that can contain all living things we need to live including, human itself, animals, plants etc will cost us more challenges, money, than solving the planet earth problems.we should do everything to restore the damages we have caused .Exploring another planet will be expensive and costly.

Personally, I would like to explore other planets. If technology could make other planets liveable and habitable, I would surely like to go.

Investing in technology is a great investment, but, colonizing other planets is what I see as possible.

A great mix of views and its certainly interesting to see. Do we think we can actually reverse the damage that Humans have had on Earth? If we put all our eggs in one basket in trying to save the Earth only to find out we cant then the human race may be doomed. Whereas if we invest into colonizing another planet we are providing the future generations with options.

I think both side have a solid foundation. But we should add one aspect in the equation, time. Currently, the earth is livable. And there are many parts of the earth that are thriving.

Now, when there is time and possibility to recover the damage that human put on the earth, we should, at any cost, to invent technology that heal the damage of the earth. I think the SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals) is one of the example where all countries work together to make the earth a better place by 2030.

However, when the earth reaches a condition like those in Interstellar movie, we should at any cost develop technology to find a new place to live.

When you claim to be very sharp, you may end being useless. They have been investing in other planets when people on earth are dying of poverty and diseases. What is the use of investing in other planets while Corona virus is killing  millions of people,or going in other planets and die of Corona.
Let them first invest in technology which can help man to live on earth better.

Gareth White replied 3 months ago

Hi Eli, I think people are always going to die from poverty and disease but lets say technology fixes this. Then the population of the world would be unviable for life to continue. I think the stats state the 10billion population threshold would breached by 2036 meaning the planet cant survive

I believe there are a number of  space projects to find earth-like clones for possible future occupation by humans. One of them is called ” the exoplanet hunter” by Nasa.

Some real interesting stuff on the NASA website regarding this and it mentions that from the recent missions a new planetary discovery has been made where the first Earth-size world, named TOI 700 d, which is located in the habitable zone of its star, the range of distances where conditions could be just right to allow liquid water on the surface.

Investing in technology is a great investment, but, colonizing other planets seems unrealistic since it is earth that is in habitable among other planets.

I understand what you are saying Kenneth but shouldn’t we be helping and planning options for our future generations – always good to have a plan B

It’s already happening I think, because I have heard of new planets being discovered. Only enough research to find visibility and life sustainability can be done.

Investing in technology is a great investment because technology makes the easier to live. The topic of colonizing other planets, I can’t explain it.

I am a huge James Bond fan and this gives me thoughts of Moonraker and how they tried to populate a planet or was it creating a space city. Good idea but I am not sure how life can be sustained on another planet or how long would it take for humans to get there. There are so many challenges here on earth and so many places that may be made habitable that these need to be explored.
I think it is time for everyone to concentrate on leaving the earth in the same condition as we found it and preserving it for future generations. Earth is a dynamic place but we do need to look after it.

Nothing can stop human desires and efforts from exploring space and other planets. Humans love to find new ones. What we hope is that investing billions of dollars in space will be beneficial for human life in the future.

Yes whilst there are loads of problems on earth here and now that need to be sorted we do need to plan ahead for our great, great, great grandchildren and provide them with options for their lives.

Exploring another planet is quiet costly, yes it’s good to know another planet, spend loads of money and energy,.
Yes it’s good to prepare a good future for our great generation. But will it be possible to live in another planet comfortable like the planet earth ? is another planet design for humans being ?
There are plenty questions to answer when it comes to exploring another planet.

Yes that is right Leno time needs to be spent to evaluate the viability of another planet to see if it can sustain human life. But to establish that we are going to have to spend some money to do it. I’m sure Elon Musk has plenty of rick backers to help him explore the solar system.

Yes we need new technology to explore another planet and know if its habitable or not for humans being,we can also use the same new technology to repare what we have destroy on planet earth too. It’s will be less costly than exploring another planet.
