Why Are the Rich So Greedy?
Of recent , we have seen the actions of the rich people, multinational organizations, etc., which I think, shows acts of greed.
Greed according to the dictionary is defined as “excessive/ extreme desire for something more than one’s proper share”.
I was recently stunned by the actions of a rich person here, in this city where I stay. He demolished a local church, which had existed for over 50 years. Isn’t this something shameful to a sensible person? I think so. He wanted to elect a building to function as a shopping mall. There was a lot of outcry among the worshipers.
But, leaving this alone, we have seen the actions of multinational organizations and how big they have contributed to environmental degradation, cutting down forests to exploit natural resources, to put up big projects, etc. For example, there’s a campaign going on, to prevent the constructing of a formula one racing circuit in a forest in Brazil. The proposers of this project is a rich organization.
We have seen many things of this nature happening allover the world. I mean they are many, we have seen factory workers striking because of little pay. This is another kind of exploitation by the rich against the poor.
If I’m to give all incidents of greed, I might spend the whole day here. But, what mean you can also mention some cases right where you are.
Why is this like that, instead of the other way around?
The rich are so greedy because they fear to be poor again, have you ever seen a poor man who was rich in your community, how his agemates treat him.
This is the real nature of man, from his childhood to adult hood is always greedy.
The more rich you become the more status you receive from the community and this forces them to work more.
They compare themselves with other rich people and find they have nothing eg the richest man in Africa has networth of 10 billion dollars and the richest in the world has over 150 billion dollars, this forces African rich man to work hard.
Competition for resources like land and capital makes the rich so greedy
Thanks Birembero for the insight.
We have the same thing here is Australia. Our banks are very greedy and a lot of our corporations are greedy. We need to distinguish between a fair return on investment and greed. We need to applaud those that strive to do better and to take risks and when they also return something to those that are less fortunate and they enable these people to learn how they made their millions. This bit is very difficult to see as not too many rich people return anything to those less fortunate and provide others with a leg up.
Hi edward, thank you for that insight, it really scary the the way the rich want to exploit everything they can land their hands on.
Development is driven by greed. Greed, which present itself as necessity, or piggybacks on necessity is present in all humans in varying degrees. People find it necessary to have/own this or that. The world is as it is today because of human necessities since the beginning of time.
The European countries found it necessary to colonize other countries to enrich themselves. Greed has always been there and shall always be present. Useful in small amounts but bad if excessive.
Hi Nolo, good point, but it needs to be controlled because it’s getting out of hand.
Is that rich people are greedy or greedy people are rich ? Maybe this two are interrelated. Normally rich people become more rich by acquiring more businesses, more projects . By doing so they start exploiting others , take advantage of weak people and situation. Money become their main concern and not others .Normally rich people live among rich people . So they want to make more and more money to become best among them .
All rich people are not greedy, far from it all poor people are not necessarily generous .the very rich will confirm that material wealth doesn’t make you happy by itself. It all depends on how you use it. The wealth people I met are very generous.
Unfortunately Jackso it becomes an obsession/addiction a bit like gambling. The thrill they seek is to make more and more money not caring about the life’s it affects or consequences it has on the people or environment. No way to stop it as with money comes power to influence.
It is generally true. Some rich people are greedy and some are not. Humans are indifferent.
*it is not generally true
It’s not obvious, not all rich people are greedy, most of them are very generous. The wealth people I met are very generous.
Greed has nothing to do with rich or poor. Everyone has temptation to greed whether he/her is rich or not. The difference is the rich has the necessary means to satisfy his greed, while the poor is not. On the other side, there are rich people who are not greedy and poor people who are not greedy too.
Thanks fdk, indeed the rich have the means to satisfy their greed.
It has become human nature to be greedy. Rich people are also just ordinary people who when they fall poor from wealth have a fear of being remembered by bankruptcy otherwise when greedy and continue to be rich, their name is remembered with the glory of wealth. But we believe that not all rich people are stingy, some are generous and sincere
Not only rich people are greedy many poor people are greedy too. It has become Human nature, we are never satisfied with what we already have. We want to get more and more even if we are hurting others. This is another matter we should think about.
Everyone is greedy for something whether it be money, love, attention, drugs, alcohol. Its like an addiction. If something makes you feel good or empowered you ultimately want more and more of it – sometimes letting it takeover everything
All humans being seem to be greedy, even members in the club including me are greedy. We want to get more and more points to earn more and more money. Who was satisfied with the points he earned on 15th October. None of us, we wanted to get more points every day.
Just to signify that not only rich people are greedy even poor people are often greedy too.
Greed dominates the world because naturally all human beings are greedy. But the difference is that there are people who do not use that natural greed for wealth while rich people use that natural greed as the main target of their lives. The rich are never satisfied with their wealth. They want to have as much wealth as possible.
There is element of greed in every person. It depends on the individual to put it under control or to let it control him or her.
I don’t think all rich people are greedy, being greed is normal for some people.
Greed is present in al humans. The aim is to keep it under control. If you let it grow, it will consume you. You’ll then need to dispossess other people to satisfy your greed.
Once they have a taste of greed they are always hungry for more
Rich people are greedy because they are not satisfied with all those things they already have.they want to get more.Trust me Human is never satisfied. Do you believe that Bill Gates, Jack MA, Donald Trump are still looking for an opportunity to make more money as me ?
Even poor people are greedy in fact.
